Welcome to our Conference
Seek the treasure you value most dearly:
if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.
We are delighted to announce that the CATE Conference of 2024 will be taking place in the beautiful, geographically, culturally and historically rich City of Dunedin (Edinburgh of the South). Our conference theme is “Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei” which translated means “Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain”. This whakatauki is about aiming high for what is truly valuable - and at CATE 2024 our goal is to add valuable treasures to your kete which you will use going forward in your Careers and Guidance practice.
CATE 2024 will bring together all treasure seekers across Aotearoa New Zealand so that together as career professionals, educators, industry experts, and researchers we can share our treasures, our creativity, insights, new initiatives, and best practices in the ever changing field of career education and guidance.
The conference will be held in Dunedin City, located around the thriving University of Otago campus. Events throughout the conference will be held at the University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic (Te Pukenga) and the Dunedin Museum. There will even be the opportunity to be accommodated at our brand new university hostel.
Come and join us for the conference which will be held from the 20th -22nd November 2024 – stay on after the conference for a weekend celebrating all that Otago offers. Central Otago vineyards, exploring the Lawrence gold fields, Dunedin Street art, incredible architecture, the Chinese Gardens, enjoying the Otago Peninsula with its gorgeous scenery, great cafes, wildlife (check out the penguins!) other marine life and of course our albatross colony.
We look forward to seeing you in 2024.

Call for Abstracts
It is with great delight and excitement that we open the Call for Abstracts for the CATE 2024 Conference.
We are seeking workshop presentations that align with our conference theme and showcase the people involved in enabling successful transitions for students into tertiary training and the workforce. We welcome submissions from a variety of fields, including career advice, education, industry, and training providers. This is an opportunity to showcase your research, share your experiences, and contribute to the development of the sector. Abstracts may address any aspect of career education and guidance and ideally align with at least one of the conference themes (please indicate which on your submission):
Seek
'Seek' invites us to venture beyond the known, to pursue new horizons, and to uncover the untapped potential within ourselves and our akonga. This is about navigating pathways of curiosity, challenging the status quo, and charting a course towards transformative success.
Treasure
‘Treasure’ serves as a catalyst for thrilling journeys and profound discoveries. It encourages us to share our treasures, our creativity, insights, new initiatives, and best practices in the ever changing field of career education and guidance.
Inspire
“Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not” – George Bernard Shaw
To ‘Inspire’ is to motivate, energize, and empower our community to make a lasting impact in both the lives of their fellow kaiako and aspiring akonga.
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and should clearly outline the focus and purpose of your proposed presentation. We are keen to equip our delegates with a toolkit of resources, activities, and ideas they can take away and embed into their own practice with their own learners. We are interested to see how you can include hands-on or interactive elements into your workshop to differentiate them from the plenary sessions.
If you are interested in submitting an abstract, please do so by using the Presentation Portal link below by 13th September 2024.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will join us for an unforgettable experience at the CATE Conference 2024.
