The WIDE Trust is a charitable trust formed in 2018. The focus of the Trust is to benefit the advancement of education, research and development in the forestry and wood industry sectors through the provision of grants and scholarships to New Zealand students and institutions.
The Trust supports students undertaking career-related studies in the wood and forest industry sectors in New Zealand and entities involved in research, development and the advancement of forestry and wood science.
To date the Trust has approved grants of $5.063m to students taking up academic or vocational studies and entities undertaking research and development within the forestry and wood sectors.
The WIDE Trust aims to build engagement and awareness of the diverse career options the forestry and wood industries offer and increase the number of young people who choose to take up careers in these industry sectors.
The Trust supports entities such as Future Foresters, Competenz, the School of Forestry, Wood Processing and Manufacturers Association, Scion Research, School of Engineering, Toi Ohomoi Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning and other organisations whose support the advancement of the forestry and wood industry sectors in New Zealand.

Future Foresters is a special interest group, as part of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry and aims to be part of the solution in attracting and encouraging talented, young people to enter and stay in all areas of the forest industry. Future Foresters have established a community of young foresters across the country to provide a place where foresters can engage with the industry and feel part of a collective group, with an emphasis on increasing the number of young people who choose forestry as an industry and building engagement and awareness of forestry as a diverse and rewarding profession within schools and tertiary providers.

The River Managers’ Special Interest Group is a sub group of the Te Uru Kahika Regional and Unitary Councils. The River Managers provide flood risk river management for the 16 regional and unitary councils that provide services to communities across New Zealand. River management and flood protection schemes exist for 100 New Zealand towns and cities, and for 5% of New Zealand’s land area with most of this being highly productive land. Flood protection infrastructure includes stopbanks, floodways and flood pumps. River managers includes river engineers and a range of people involved in flood protection technical, environmental, science research, planning and community based activities with tangata whenua and others. Floods are the most common and significant natural hazard that New Zealand faces, especially with the impact of climate change events.
